Calibrating a Dynamic Cone Penetrometer

Written by Sophie Rhéaume | Jan 19, 2018 8:48:26 PM

We explain how to calibrate a dynamic cone penetrometer. In this case, we will use it for an interlocking pavement installation.

For this project, we performed a nuclear density test.

The result that we got can now be used as a benchmark to calibrate a dynamic cone penetrometer, a simple tool of $200-300.

STEP 1: Pick the tool up and drop it 10 times.

STEP 2: Mark the level of penetration.

In this case, we have approximately 2 1/2 inches of penetration.

STEP 3:  Replicate the procedure all along the apron and the garage floor, and any spots in-between.

Doing this will prevent settlement from the repetitive traffic load.

Now that we calibrated our tool against a nuclear density test, we won’t need to perform this test for every project done in this environment and these soil conditions.

We can use this tool to make sure we’ve achieved the needed density.
