Paver Pete explains what to do with your daylighted drain tile in a segmental retaining wall installation.
For this project, we constructed a segmental retaining wall.
The drain tile we installed allows a positive gravity flow of water away from the wall (go to pros.techo-bloc.com/drain-tile for more details on drain tile installation).
The pipe coming out of the wall can be an unattractive element, and most of the time, it’s preferable to meet aesthetic expectations.
Here’s a solution.
STEP 1: Establish erosion and sediment control measures (E&S measures) outside the perimeter of the wall to prevent damages to the wall system.
STEP 2: Lay and compact an 8-inch layer of low permeability clay fill around the toe of the wall.
STEP 3: Wrap the area under the pipe with an impermeable pond liner.
Tuck it in right against the wall and allow 6 inches from the wall to the extremity of the liner.
STEP 4: Cut the pipe.
Cutting the pipe without using the liner and low permeability clay fill will cause the water to drain at the toe of the wall, affecting its integrity.
This solution allows us to extend adequately beyond so the water isn’t dumped right into the base, which can wash away the soil or base material of the wall system.
STEP 5: Install clean stone over the fabric.
When this type of material gets wet, it remains very attractive and colorful, which decorates the area well.
