Understanding SRI: It's Getting Hot in Here

Quick and simple, Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) measures a surface’s ability to reject solar heat.

It is a composite measure of a surface’s solar reflectance (how well a surface reflects) and emittance (releases) absorbed solar radiation.

But what does that mean in the real world?

The lower the SRI, the hotter a material is likely to become in the sunlight: Think running barefoot on burning coals…get the picture?

What to remember in all of this?

Dark colors = Low SRI= Traps heat
Light colors= High SRI= Reflects heat

Key takeway?

While dark colors are super trendy in outdoor design right now, they are a better fit for decorative bandings or on surfaces where people don’t walk barefoot. For pool decks, patios & other places people are likely to walk barefoot, stick with light-colored materials with high SRI values.
