A soil separator prevents migration of the soil material into an aggregate base or other types of base.
During the construction of a base, a soil separation fabric is not necessary when the soil type is sandy, and even less when choosing flowable fill as base material, which is liquid concrete.
However, it’s a different situation when you are faced with a clay soil, what we have most of the time in North America.
In this situation, we could use a nonwoven fabric.
We prefer a woven fabric because it has bilateral tension ability.
The loads will be dispersed as they are placed on it, and any settlement will be bridged.
Excavate a trench.
Place material into the trench, encapsulating the aggregate base.
Tension the geotextile by driving spikes in the corners.
It should have a tension rate of 3% to optimize its performance.
Apply 24 to 36 inches overlap and complete the stretch of the base.
