Independent Step Construction

Independent step construction method presented for circumstances where the elevation changes result in a modified riser height. The use of Gator Grid – biaxial geogrid – for soil stabilization is presented.

STEP 1: Install geotextile fabric above the subgrade to keep the base from migrating into that soil.

We used Gator fabric by Alliance Gator (http://www.flex-lock.com/)

STEP 2: Add a drain tile elbowed to the dry well, that is sitting in a bed of 4-inch thick #57 stone.

STEP 3: Place 8 to 10 inches layer of base consisting, again, of #57 stone.

STEP 4: Put another layer of Gator Fabric to keep the bedding layer of ¼ inch clean stone (#8) from migrating into the voids of the #57 stone.

STEP 5: Install first step with one row of units below grade. Build the steps vertically using Techo-Bloc patented clip system for optimum alignment.

We used the Raffinato polished 7-inch unit from Techo-Bloc.

STEP 6: Add clean stone (#57) stabilized with a biaxial grid system behind the step.

We used the Gator Grid from Alliance.

STEP 7: Build the subsequent steps in a modular system, which means that each unit bridges the previous one in order to resist settlement.

Here we used Blu Grande slabs (can also use Para 10x20 to avoid cuts) that we cut into 10-inch pieces to match the Bullnose Grande.

Here’s the final result:
