Paver Pete discusses the surrounding grades of a concrete walkway to be overlaid with paving stones.
When overlaying a walkway, we need to consider the surrounding grades.
How are we going to meet up the existing driveway and the lawn?
What are we going to do where there is a planting bed?
For this project, the planting bed is not a big concern since the additional elevation created by the paver thickness will help retain the mulch.
In order to meet the driveway, we cut the walkway and then tapered it down with a crushed stone base (ASTM C2940), setting to an elevation where the pavers will sit ¼-inch above the driveway, where they meet.
Along the front edge, we cut the sod into strips and used an excavator to peel them back. This saved saved us time at the end of the project and preserved the consistent look of the front lawn.
Then, we filled it with topsoil and folded it back over.
