Helpful Tips to Build a Solid Stoop – 2nd part

In a previous article, we presented how to build a solid base for a stoop.

Now we need to ensure proper drainage and stabilization of the system.

Downspouts & Surface Drainage

Watch as we handle drainage problems in a stoop construction project.

All drainage problems need to be taken care of.

In this case, we have 2 downspouts and a gravel bed that needs to be drained.

STEP 1: Install schedule 40 pipes to direct the water that will flow through the downspouts and the gravel bed.

STEP 2:  Elbow those pipes to a surface drain.

This surface drain permits proper surface and subsurface drainage for the bedding layer.

STEP 3: Plumb it all out into the environment.

Biaxial Grid Stabilization

Using a geogrid is a cheap insurance against settlement and failure.

When building raised structures like a stoop or a raised patio, we recommend adding a layer of biaxial geogrid every 8 to 16 inches.

This geogrid should have strength in both directions and it should be tensioned at 3%.

Make sure it extends completely to the face of the block.
